I try to learn as much as I can about a project site, its past and surroundings. Then in the design, I include an element of familiarity, which helps the community accept it as their own.
After the historical research I did of the area, I wanted to connect the site to its former uses and also highlight its modern-day importance as part of the city’s infrastructure system.
The programming requirements called for a trail and green space along an old rail line in Salt Lake City. The west end linked to a regional trail system, but was mostly undeveloped. The east end was an important point in the country’s rail network. My plan kept the natural setting and brought a creek back to the surface on the west end. I also added picnic spots and a walking loop for employees of the nearby office, who I observed taking walks during their breaks. An old switch tower on the east end would be restored as an lookout point with explanations of the railroad’s historical role.
